Yasin Malik, who was imprisoned on charges of terror funding, has been sentenced to two counts of life imprisonment and five 10-year prison sentences, all to be held concurrently. Yasin Malik is one of the most prominent members of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, which stands for a free Kashmir outside of Indian occupancy. He is also the chief of the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front. He is regarded as a young, brave leader and has been an inspiration for youth across Kashmir. His sentence has sparked many protests across Kashmir and is expected to lead to more violence and chaos. According to official’s Indian forces killed six fighters in occupied Kashmir and shot dead a female TV performer and a police officer following the conviction of the region’s best-known leader.
Yasin Malik was born on 3 April 1966. As a young boy, he witnessed many violent incidents carried out by Indian security forces. As a young teenager, he formed a party called the Tala Party, which served as a revolutionary front, printing and distributing political materials. Yasin Malik has been arrested multiple times in 1999, 2002 and in 2019. In March of 2020, Yasin Malik and six accomplices were charged under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA), the Arms Act 1959 and the Ranbir Penal Code. 2 years later a Delhi court reviewed the evidence presented against them and ordered the framing of charges against Yasin Malik. In a bold move, Yasin Malik refused legal representation and chose not to contest the charges against him. According to him, he has no faith in the Indian legal system.
Yasin Malik’s wife Mushaal Malik has expressed her determination to fight the wrongful sentence given by Indian courts at every international forum. She addressed a news conference in Islamabad on Thursday, where she said this sentence and every new injustice by the Indian government ignites a new spirit in the Kashmiri people’s struggle for a free land. She also added that freedom flows in the blood of the Kashmiri people and this spirit will never die. Mushaal Malik has called upon the United Nations to set up a Commission of Inquiry and Observer Mission for Kashmir as Hurriyat leaders are incarcerated in jails on concocted charges and sentenced through unfair trials.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari strongly condemned the sentencing of the Kashmiri leader. They declared the legal proceedings that lead to Yasin Malik’s sentence as a “sham trial” and stated that they can never imprison the idea and beliefs Yasin Malik stood for. This support is still seen as too little as the majority of the international community is silent over the unjust sentence of Yasin Malik. This sentence is seen as a sentence against all of Kashmir.
