Curly-haired people all over the world know how hard it is to keep their hair in the best shape. Having to deal with the weather, stress, and build-up from using products that are not suited to curly hair can all make your curls look dull and worn out.

There are ways to take care of your hair that are made just for curly hair, so you can refresh your curls and keep going with confidence. One of these methods is called the Curly Girl Method, which is the most renowned and the most loved method for all curly heads and stylists.

What exactly is the Curly Girl Method?

Curly Girl Method or CGM was a term first introduced by the Author Lorraine Massey. The CGM includes a step-by-step, carefully written set of rules on how to take care of naturally curly or textured hair. It essentially highlights the damaging hair styling routines and mentions the dos and Don’ts of taking care of curly hair.

One of the main reasons for the popularity of the CGM is that it has proven to bring back the natural texture and volume to curly hair which was otherwise rough and dry. The CGM consists of a carefully written set of rules called The Golden Rules and the author claims that by following these rules, the natural curls can be restored and in better health.

Listed below are the Golden Rules of the Curly Girl Method:
  • Avoid Sulphate Shampoos – especially those containing harmful sulfates like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Ammonium Laureth Sulfate.
  • Avoid applying any and all types of heat to the hair -especially styling tools like flat irons and blow-dryers.
  • Use Wide tooth Combs – it prevents breakage, tangled curls, and fizziness.
  • Keep away the harsh fragrances – these can dry out your hair as it may contain alcohol/chemicals.
  • Cut out the use of non-water soluble silicones – avoid products that contain these types of silicones.
  • Avoid products containing alcohol as the main ingredient – these can dry out your hair.

Basically, these Golden Rules highlight the Don’ts of taking care of curly hair or how to stop doing the bad things you’ve been taught to do to your hair over the years. It’s the best “hair diet” because it gets rid of buildup while giving curls the moisture they need to stay curly.

Once you’ve memorized these Golden Rules, you can move on to the very basic Curly Girl Method for beginners.

Curly Girl Method for Beginners:

Step 0: Final ‘Reset’ Wash

Wash your hair with a Sulphate Shampoo to get rid of the silicone and any type of build-up in your hair.

Step 1: Cleanse

Use a co-wash or a sulfate-free shampoo to wash your hair. Massage scalp for at least 60 seconds before rinsing.

Step 2: Condition

Apply a generous amount of conditioner to your hair until it is fully saturated. Once the conditioner is applied, detangle your curls with your fingers or a wide tooth comb. Rinse out the conditioner.

Step 3: Style

Use a desired Curl Cream or Gel and rake it throughout your hair. Make sure that all your strands are covered and then use a styling brush to style your hair or scrunch to form clumps.

Step 4: Dry

Scrunch out the excess water from your hair using a cotton t-shirt or a micro-fiber towel. After that, air dry or use a diffuser under the hair is completely dry. Once completely dry, scrunch out the hair to get rid of the gel cast for smoother and softer curls.

Step 5: Keep Going

Repeat these steps on your wash days and your curls will be lustrous in no time.

(Ps: Don’t use Sulphate Shampoo unless you’ve product build-up from the use of silicones or wax).

Here’s a before and after for you

The above mentioned steps are perfect for you if you are new to CGM. Just adopt the golden rules and follow the steps regularly. One more thing you can do to avoid using harmful products on your hair is by making it a habit to read the ingredients on the back of every product you plan to purchase. And girls, always look out for Sulfates and Silicones.
